Re: Weekend rides Sep 15 - 16
Well guys,
What a great ride that was today! Four of us left Wests Rugby carpark at 6am, GD, 180, Stuart (180's mate), and Simon (Stuarts mate).
We headed first up the front of Cootha to then duck across to Waterworks Rd via back streets and over to Settlement Rd and on to Lochinvar Rd at Upper Kedron!
It was at about this time that I learned that Simon had only just started cycling (1200km in total and 45km being his longest ride).
I immediately thought, right, this will be interesting!!
When we called in to the garage at Samford to refill water bottles, the first signs of trepidation on his face were clear..
Onwards to the base of Glorious to start the challenging ascent. It was nice to see that the authorities had sorted out the timing on the 'temporary' traffic light to allow us to get through before being confronted with traffic coming in the opposite direction! OR, like Simon said, maybe we were just climbing super quick. I don't think so!!
Anyway, GD got ahead on the climb proper with his 'out of the saddle grind technique' but was later to be found sitting on the armco about two thirds of the way up 'complaining' about pulling wheelies because of the gradient. (Gotta get you a compact mate) Seriously, you won't 'lose' anything as long as you've got an 11.
After another few minutes we got to the T-Junction to head right towards Glorious Village cafe for a well earned coffee until Stu and Simon got there. Needless to say, Simon did NOT look like a happy camper at this point. After talking a bit of the usual bull*hit, we took off towards Nebo across the rollies and down towards The Gap. At this point we parted ways with Stu and Simon who took a more direct route back to East Brisbane while GD and I followed the official Lumpy 100 course over Gap Creek Rd and through Kenmore to join the Western Freeway bikepath back to the cars at Toowong. I have to say the legs were feeling it towards the end as it was the most testing ride I'd done since a couple of 'big ones' in France.
All in all, a tough ride, but done in a beautiful area with all the scenery and birdlife on a cracker of a day!
106km
2310 mts ascent AND...
hopefully a calorie deficit.
There is talk of a revised route being proposed for next Sunday minus Cootha (we can do that anytime), as we have an interstate visitor making an appearance... more on that later!!

Re: Weekend rides Sep 15 - 16
Thanks for the write up Phil. Sorry for canning it at the last moment, but Noblesse oblige.
Nevertheless, I got in 1hr at 630a up to W.Pt. held 40 with a tailwind most of the way up, 35 back. A TTer got on my tail on the way back, into the headwind. Guilt must have got to him eventually and half way across the bridge he started sharing the load.
Poor Simon. I know what that feels like. I wonder if the ride smashed his trust and respect for Stewart.
I did a thorough clean and inspection of my wheels, frame, and fork this arvo. Found absolutely nothing. Will wait for Ashley's verdict.
Nearly clicked the button on 3s but will reconsider the Bracciano.

Hey GD, seriously, what do you think the gradient is above the 2nd switchback, apparently where you were losing traction?
IMHO, Mt Glorious Rd is easier than Coot-tha backside until the first switchback. Then it goes from sublime to ridiculous, real quick.

I think its 20%?.. Yea was easy going up until the hair pin the it got gnarly real fast. Awesome though! To hell with once a month I say we do that every sunday. I didnt mind cootha at the start as it kinda set the standard straight away. Plus helped get a few extra elevation points on the grid.

Re: Weekend rides Sep 15 - 16
My Garmin says it just touches 20% just after the 'bends' up from the left hand switchback, but to be honest, I don't think you can really say the climb starts until you've done the last little downhill bit over the creek after the second traffic light. Whatever is before that, is just a warm up!!
To compare it at all to the back of Cootha in any way is, well, no comparison. As we know, all climbs are very different, and Cootha, although it 'just' hits 13% in one spot, is a genuine 8% average climb. Great for repeats but not really a test as such with a few k's in the legs.
I'm with you GD, the more often the better. Actually, I'm feeling quite soft after reading about Charlesy's Somerset Dam loop they did yesterday. Up through Wamuran, Kilcoy, Somerset Dam, then the winner is the first to the top of Glorious from the other side. (160km), then ride home.
Who's up for it?

Re: Weekend rides Sep 15 - 16
I'd wear my 3 pairs of thongs out quick smart if I rode it every month!!!
Though am curious to see how 34/28 goes. Furtherest I've ridden is about 80 metres past the second switchback (the left hander) with 34/25.
Agree Glorious Rd to the first switchback is a warm up.

I've slotted Glorious in GD.
which at least has the effect of stopping me from picking up a bottle of red on the way home from work.
Every bottle = 500 Calories = 71 grams of body fat.
GD, I'll be interested in your Coot-tha backside time. Reckon you'd be able to do sub 10 minutes currently.

Hey Bruce, I've got an 11-28 in the box here at home. Also just about to hit the 'go' button on a CRC order which includes another one (among other things) , so you're welcome to take one off my hands for a carton of Coopers Sparkling!
We also need to arrange a GC Hinterland ride for Saturday if you're keen, then back up at Glorious on Sunday.
