Taking Inventory of 2012
Hi
With 2012 taking it's last gasps I though it would be worthwhile taking inventory of 2012. It would be great to share: how many kays (horizontal and vertical) you have completed, (Phil Millham - my money is on you buddy); what was your highlight and; what was your lowlight, (maybe you didn't have one).
Stats: 5,486km - 37,432m (only 500km on a MTB this year)
Highlight - Tambourine and O'Reilly's on Anzac Day.
Lowlight - Getting badly broken on a 100km ride after 3 months off training.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
2012 13,740km
high :
- 190k Can Beech Chil Tome Springbrook Can (this year was my intro to the GC Hinterland, and I love it. Feel at home there)
low :
- breaking 3 ribs in a Nundah crit (and Mark Mc simultaneously suffering a PNX), and not having the experience to yell and elbow the wnkrs cutting the bend.
looking forward:
- improve bike craft (fast braking, track stand, better hopping)
- 7% bodyfat
- more vegan eating.
- improve cardio with swimming
- less k's, better rest, cycling for longevity and optimal health.
- Coot-tha backside goal <11mins (current PB 11.45)
- I'm uncommitted to racing in 2013. it's still a sprinters domain. will rest on the laurels of one 20 min solo break for a year
- progress 2 work projects.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
11,738 kms
131,165 mts (5400 in the last three days)
Highlight - Too many to pick one but climbing the 3 sides of Mont Ventoux in a day if I had to pick one.
Stats.. 10.21 Elapsed time. 8.13 ride time. 140kms with 4375 mts ascent. Best of all, made it into the club. http://www.clubcinglesventoux.org/en/graduates.html?did=C&pid=88&pp=50
Lowlight - Can't think of any. Any day on the bike can't be that bad.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Forgot to mention, I can't wait to get back to France and have a real good crack at the Bicinglette.
What I did this year... TWICE. Has to be done in the same day, 272kms, 8886mts.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Well, who would have thunk it...did an alcohol burner ride at 5p this arvo, which involved a few laps up to the Gold Coast spit....and chalked up my first flat for the year.
I'd planned to avoid where I thought there'd be the most broken glass....but pretty hard on the GC.
Phil, I am hoping to get to Europe this year too, but will see how my enterprising pursuits go.
Maybe I need to reward myself with Euro velo trip upon reaching 7%bodyfat...

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
2012- 12,140km ~28kph 81,096m
Highlight - placing 3rd at Elimbah handicap behind Fless. Runner up to him for trophy as winner wasn't HPRW
Lowlight - crashing on home corner at Nundah, broken helmet, concussion (in hindsight) - my lack of skills in a crowded messy race and eager beavers encroaching the turn.
A good year for me as with concerted weight loss means that I don't completely blow up on the hills so much anymore - It has made my cycling much more enjoyable and given me more confidence to join the group rides.

Distance ...dunno really ...about 3000k Height ...mmmm about 6-700m
Highs ...consistently winning 'D' grade, the unsuccessful breakaway at Elimbah that was soooo much fun & promotion to C2
Lows ....loosing fitness after making the effort to get to C2
The future ......have fun, get my *&!!@%$ together and put in more k's and more hills.....and less food (Xmas has not helped either!!!!)

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Hmm - Here goes...
4946 km
31659 metres (5735 in Dec.)
High - Joining HPRW and racing.
Lows - Getting fitness after riding a motor bike for a month
Broken collar bone
Getting fitness back again.
5 months without a swim.
Realising I'll never be fit enough to do it all.
Now I need to learn how to recover quickly, meanwhile - ride more.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Uuummmmm, I can hardly type this as I've had a prang with a kid on the bike track! I couldn't believe it. She saw me coming. She wobbled to the left . . . she wobbled to the right . . . she straightened up so I thought all was well but . . . as she was about to pass me she turned straight into me whacked me on the fingers with her flat bar and that was it. I was travelling at 42kph (a tail wind). Neither of us came off. She continued on to daddy and I continued on verbalizing what I thought of dogs and kids! Anyway I suppose they have to learn somewhere. I just wish they wouldn't choose me to practise on. The blood started oozing through my glove and the fingers and hand started to swell and by the time I got home it was blue. But the blue and swelling have almost gone now so I dare say there are no broken bones. I'll be off the bike for a day or so. It is always good to start an inventory with a negative because everything that follows is a positive. I've had my best cycling year yet. Most notable improvement is in my climbing. Read my lips . . . I'm still crap but at least I can do Mt Coot-tha. The up side of training on Mt Coot-tha is that I can do hills pretty well. The reward for getting past Channel 10 is the rollies along the top where with judicious use of gearing and high spinning I can do really well all the way to the restaurant. Approaching the restaurant is my favourite as I can usually manage the middle 50s along the last bit. And onehundredandeighty, even without my favourite descender picking my line for me I can get up into the 70s on the descent. So I'm pretty happy with my climbing effort. Top speed has suffered however. I suppose I should be worried about this as indicating my inevitable decline but because it is inevitable I have decided to accept it as part of the aging process. I'm still having fun and that's what counts. Regrettably I don't have figures as my Garmin Totals seems to have zeroed itself out. Maybe it is my fault. I must have wiped the totals out because it says I have only travelled 1200km. So not to be outdone here is my guesstimate:
Meters climbed: 247,352m (in one vertical line or that's how it feels sometimes)
Distance ridden: 71, 447km
Average speed: 52kph (I wish)
Dogs killed: Lots and lots
Children abused (err . . . not sexually . . . oh no no no . . . just verbally) Maybe three or four but did they cop it!
Car/truck/bus drivers given the finger: I'd need a computer
Coffee guzzled: 100l or it might have been 1000l
All in all a really good year that has seen me get much much stronger with higher average speeds, better climbing but strangely slower top speed. I look forward to the year ahead.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Could have been worse Paul.....like this guy who just posted on the BNA forum....
It would be hard to make up a story like this!!!
The clamp that clamps the seat onto the post failed.
I was sitting up as it snapped, seat came off and I went straight down the post and landed on the tyre. Bike was moving and I wedgied myself with the wheel. Pretty much left butt check on one side, tyre running along the butt groove, the right butt cheek the other side
Obviously the spinning wheel on my butt hole ripped it open. Wife collected me, I was just going to have shower and clean it up but when I git home there was a lot of blood and things didn't feel right down there.
I am going in for surgery now too. Is a 3cm tear and then they want to make sure there is no internal damage. Need to have me under a general to do that.
Worse case is damaged rectum and scfincta which could mean a colostumy bag till the internal damage has healed. Best case (fingers crossed) is just stitches and a sore arse for a few weeks.

Yuk BG, talk about oneupmanship. Some people will do anything to get noticed. But seriously that was seriously bad eh! Poor B won't be on the bike for quite a while. Oh yes, it's just as well I replaced my seatpost some months ago as it had a crack in it.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
This is my 2012:
Highlights: 2 wins in club B grade, 5th state crit champs, number of placings in club B grade, and 3rd place at the Ipswich Open.
Lowlights: Crashing twice in one week in March, carrying an injury through most of the year, and 2 months off the bike injury recovery.
But mostly, 2012 has taught me heaps in terms of training, nutrition, recovery and race tactics. I learnt heaps about myself in terms of my abilities as a bike rider, and I hope to capitalise on that for 2013.
Goals for 2013: improve my time trialing ability, win at least one open race, and move into either open or club A grade.

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Well, 2012 didn't see the mileage I wanted to complete, but being away at work 1/2 the time, the numbers are not too bad:-
5,414 K's
AV 23.3 KPH
122,538 calories
44,400M of climbing.
Finished the year with a high speed stack in Rockhampton on freshly laid bitumen. Apparently I used to own something called an AC joint, that is now trashed.
The new helmet - bin job
The new S-works shoes - holed
The Bike = TBA. Still not had chance to take inventory.
The arm still in a sling and apparently I might be up for surgery when I get back
Will be a slow start to 2013.
Cheers

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Geez Pom some people will do anything for a new bike!.. ha.. that sucks mate, all the best on a quick and speedy recovery!
well been trying to figure out my stats for the year but its a bit of a pain in the bum since I switched from imapmyride to Strava and plus I only just got a Garmin about a month ago.. just before the bring in the new models of cause! DOH! anyway here are my estimates..
Ks about 11,500
mts climbed.. alot.. but not as many as 180
Highs: wow so many! first race/prime/win.. done Glorious, Clear Mt (both ways), Obi Obi and the amazing sceenery of the sunny coast, the El Salvadorian coffee at Tyalgum plus Mt Tomewin oh the the choccy Nannas, The Noosa Century ride, Brisbane to Goldcoast.. the list goes on! I really have had a great year of exploring up here in QLD..
Lows: Flu and muscles saying.. Im done.. I need a break!.. then being off the bike.. or even worse, being on the bike and riding as hard as you can just to come up 50% of where you were a few weeks ago..
Next on the list... Like to get a team together and do the cycle leg of Cairns Triathlon, Eventually do the Wollongong to Sydney ride, always wanted to do a Newcastle to Sydney ride, Win a B grade race, deff more racing!.. maybe try some other clubs out and possibly some bigger races, more track work at Chandler Center Oh and a OS cycle trip.. And deff get stronger and faster... always faster and stronger
Wholy crap Dahlpad how the hell did you do 71,000 ks last year! MACHINEPAD!

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
GD - there is nothing holy in crap let me assure you. Now, the figures I provided are all based on how I feel. I feel I have ridden 70,000km and climbed 200,000m - all in the past month or so! Obviously these figures are guesses as my Garmin has somehow been zeroed out and is only registering 1200km and 30,000m climbing so either there is something radically wrong with it or it may be telling me to get a new battery (it's two years old). Fortunately it registered the correct speed in yesterday's Nundah training because it registered a 59kph sprint and this was backed up by Zane who was riding alongside me. This in itself is a great relief to me as I thought I had started to collapse under the burden of old age after leading GraemeW out in our last race and struggling to get to 49kph. I realise now that that speed was a direct result of the effects of the bronchitis I was experiencing at the time. So it is a big relief to know I am now only 1kph away from my only goal in riding and that is to do 60kph in a sprint. I'm hoping to achieve that within the next few months. So . . . more Mt Coot-thas, more Mt Coot-thas and more Mt Coothas.

good time to be getting in some hard base k's Dahlek. you should come on one of Phil's man rides....bound to get you to 60kph, without yesterday's 32kph wind assist...

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
Ha Ha Bruce, I was wondering when someone would mention the tailwind. I'm pretty sure it was gusting to more than a mere 32kph as well. Almost as helpful as having a leadout which I didn't have. But I take your point. It was a very controlled sprint which didn't come out of a 40+kph crit race either so I was pretty fresh. But for me neither tailwind nor leadout are to be considered. The validity of a sprint is not compromised by a leadout so why should it be negated by a tailwind? Either way I don't care because I just want to do a 60kph sprint on the flat once and then I will be happy and you can be sure it won't ever happen into a headwind! All this aside I was pretty happy with the outcome as it shows I still have the potential to reach my goal. I'll be trying hard anyway. I still haven't the money to rejoin the club this year but will no doubt save enough in the weeks ahead. I often wonder why I bother joining as you know I only race occasionally. I've got my training plan part of which means Mt Coot-tha six times a week and whatever else I can fit in. I do Mt Coot-tha to improve my aerobic capacity not my climbing ability and it seems to be working because I manage hills quite well and I was nowhere near my aerobic limit in that sprint. I have been doing Mt Coot-tha for a couple of months and find I am no faster now than the day I started. The most apparent difference is that my breathing and heartrate on the climb have reduced to - at times - quite comfortable levels. But I am no faster on the actual climb. I think I'm stronger for it though because the rollies along the top are done at an entirely satisfactory pace and my improvement in this area is quite apparent. Hope so anyway. I'm even getting better at descending but reaching 77kph is nothing to write home about. I've also joined Strava (I was trying to join Stravos but Google eventually sorted me out) but don't know how to use it yet nor do I know how to "follow'' someone. I've tried to follow MartinW and I think I have logged onto him but can't seem to work out how to read his rides. I've tried to look at riders who do Mt Coot-tha to see what speeds they are doing it but without success. I'm not into hi-tech modern computer thingos so we will just have to wait and see if I even end up uploading a ride of my own. I did see one of Paul Willett's rides and he produced 400+ watts or something so I suppose that means you have to have a power metre on your bike. Don't worry I'm not getting one! Anyway, didn't do Mt Coot-tha today (too hot) and won't ride down to the track tonight (too hot) but I'll definitely do Scarborough on Sunday. I know, I know. I should do Phil's rides but I'm focusing on my own selfish plan/goals.

Machinepad..
For Strava first logon to Strava then on top you should see..
STRAVA | DASHBOARD | TRAINING | EXPLORE | CHALLENGES upgrade to premium | your name | UPLOAD ACTIVITY
ok so first to upload a ride, connect your garmin and give it a min for the computer to recognise it. Then just click on that word "UPLOAD ACTIVITY" that is in the top right hand corner.. It will then search for the Garmin. Next you will see two options/buttons that say something like "Upload all new" or "Upload only selected", Just click on the Upload All new and then you will see all the information being up loaded. After this has completed it will show you a list of all your rides, click on "Save" (there will prob be a lot of them) and once you are done it will goto your home screen, or as it is also know your "Dashboard". Here you can click the title of the ride and it will give you a break down of speed, cadence, heart rate.. etc. you will also see your Friends workouts here too.
So to get Friends.. first give them lots of money,
but in Strava just click on "EXPLORE" that is up the top, from there you will see a map and anther window style thing come up, It will also have its own menu
SEGMENT EXPLORE | SEGMENT SEARCH | ACTIVITY SEARCH | ATHLETE SEARCH | CLUBS
So click on the "ATHLETE SEARCH" word/button, then you will see a search bar come on your screen. Click on this, then type in a name.. say mine and you should see me come up, Im the Fourth one down. click on "Request to follow" and there your done.
I then will get your request and approve it and now when you goto your "DASHBOARD" you will see my rides as well as your own..
Hope This helps! any probs gimmie a ring
Oh and 60ks is ok along the flat.. but 90 plus down a hill is more fun!

Re: Taking Inventory of 2012
hey GD, I just asked to be your Strava friend about an hour ago.
I joined it over a year ago, but stuck with garmin's site.
Decided to give it another go this morning.
Dahlek, yeah whatever.
You'll plateau with your Coot-tha training soon. Then you can reconsider man rides.
Also, a gun athlete of your vintage would benefit very much from a strength and conditioning program in a gym, for your legs. That will do more to get you to 60kph at this point.
But I've decided free advice is rarely valued, and never acted on, so will stop there.

Also, a gun athlete of your vintage would benefit very much from a strength and conditioning program in a gym, for your legs. That will do more to get you to 60kph at this point.
But I've decided free advice is rarely valued, and never acted on, so will stop there.

Bruce, search for Paul Dahl, or check out who I am following.
Perhaps we should start a Strava club for AC riders.

Bruce, Strave CALCS the power and the energy used. The energy is always different to what Garmin calculates.
