Sad encounter with a Coot
Riding along beside Nudgee Golf Course this morning with a mate, and I saw a native hen (Coot?) on the path ahead. It looked a bit dopey and unaware, so I yelled out which got its attention and it seemed confused about what to do.....then at the last moment it tried to exit stage left, right across our path. I missed it, but Peter almost got thrown off when he went right over it. We turned around straight away and it looked like its spine was damaged, and generally in a bad way.....so sadly we decided to club it over the head and give it a quick and humane ending.
...just thought I'd relay this to raise awareness. I think it was a coot....generally black or dark grey with orange feet and beak. size of a small domestic hen. I see them all the time near the Golf Course.
